Desk Research — Quantitative / Market Data

A quantitative layer added on top of the qualitative passes. Read the reliability flag on every figure. Legend: [HIGH] trade-body/platform-published · [MED] third-party analytics estimate (Similarweb/AppBrain) · [LOW] blog/secondary estimate · [N/F] not found (do not invent).

Equipment / machine market value — report scopes diverge wildly; directional only:

  • Home-brewing equipment (hobby): ~$2.08B (2023) → $3.38B (2030), ~7.65% CAGR [MED]. Use this as the TAM anchor.
  • Home-brewing machine reports ($26B–$85B) almost certainly bundle countertop appliances/commercial kit — not comparable; do not cite as hobby TAM.

Demand signals

  • Google Trends — [N/F] for indexed values this pass (needs a manual capture). Qualitative proxy: clone-recipe content is a large, evergreen vertical (BYO 300-recipe clone book; Beer Maverick "100+ official brewery clones"; Northern Brewer/Homebrew Finds clone hubs) → durable, non-seasonal demand [LOW].
  • App scale:
    • Brewfather ≈ 230,000 Play downloads, ~510/day, 4.9/5 [MED].
    • BeerSmith Recipe Cloud = 43,000 registered users; claims "world's largest single recipe repository" [HIGH/MED].
    • Brewer's Friend ≈ 14,000 Android downloads [MED].
  • Public recipe-DB sizes (differentiator-relevant):
    • Brewer's Friend = 320,000+ public recipes [HIGH].
    • Brewfather library = "thousands", no exact count [MED/N-F].
    • Grainfather app = "1000s" [MED]. Little Bock (FR) = no published count [N/F].

Takeaway: incumbents already host large public recipe corpora (Brewer's Friend 320k+) — but they are repositories with weak social / clone-lineage features. The cloning-and-sharing community angle is not their core. That gap is the quantitatively-supportable wedge.

Uncovered competitors / adjacent products

ProductWhat it isStatusClone / community / sharing?
Grainfather Community appRecipe builder + brew controller, hardware-tied; 1000s recipes; device integrationsActive, hardware-ledYes, but ecosystem-gated
Brew NinjaCommercial brewery management (B2B)ActiveNo (pro/commercial)
BrewBenchOpen-source brew controller / fermentation monitorActive, niche/DIYNo
Captain BrewFree recipe builder + discovery + calculatorsActivePartial (discovery; no clone lineage)
Plaato / Brewbrain Float / Tilt / iSpindelFermentation telemetry devices + appsActive hardwareNo (telemetry only)
Brewspy / monitor.beerAggregators for fermentation-device dataActiveNo
BeerSmith Recipe CloudWeb recipe repository (43k users)ActivePartial (repo, weak social)
Brewist / Brewterixnamed but [N/F] — no reliable info; do not characterize

Pattern: the fermentation-device category is adjacent, not competitive (telemetry, not recipe community). The recipe-community space is genuinely thin beyond Brewer's Friend, BeerSmith Cloud, Brewfather — and none lead with clone lineage / social cloning as their headline.

Reddit numbers

  • r/Homebrewing ≈ 1.2M members [MED]. Notably ≈ the entire AHA US-homebrewer estimate — the sub alone is roughly the size of the US homebrew population, indicating strong international + lapsed-hobbyist reach.
  • Thread-level vote/comment counts: [N/F] this pass (Reddit not directly fetchable).

Adjacent markets (brief)

  • Germany — among Europe's largest homebrew scenes. MaischeMalzundMehr (recipe DB) and Hobbybrauer.de (forum) are heavily cross-referenced and Brewfather-importable. No published counts [N/F]. A future-expansion / localization signal (DE after FR+EN), not an immediate competitor.

Data gaps to state honestly in the report

  1. France/Europe homebrewer population — not found; state explicitly, do not estimate.
  2. Google Trends indexed values — need a manual capture.
  3. Brewfather / Little Bock exact recipe-library counts — not published.
  4. Equipment-vs-machine market reports disagree ~40x by scope; only ~$2B hobby-equipment / ~7.5% CAGR is safe to cite.
